Movement Description: Imagism is a movement devoted to the clarity of expression through the use of precise visual images. It began in 1912 and was lead by Ezra Pound after he annotated a poem by Hilda Dolittle and sent it to Poetry magazine. Imagist poets sought to replace unclear abstractions with exactness of observed detail. Imagism defied Romanticism because of Romanticism's use of abstractness in its poems. The movement ended in 1917.
Poem Analysis: In the first sentence Lowell explains to the reader that when you think of something for too long it can become dangerous. In the second sentence, she believes that it doesn't matter if the thought is about someone/thing good, the outcome of those thoughts will be negative. She also believes that you can't remember the good without the bad, and if you can remember the thought will consume you. in lines 8-12 she tells of how her brother's death was peaceful, but left her devastated. The pain is weighing her down in every way. Lastly, Lowell thinks her brothers spirit is still with her because he is binding her freedom( from him). Until she accepts his passing, she can't live her live the way she is supposed to.
Literary Devices: Euphemism was used in line 11 because Lowell could have said her brother was dead instead say he was at rest. Apostrophe was also used through out the poem because every time she refereed to the thought or you, she was referring to her brother. Apostrophe a direct address to a person who is absent.
